The Riviera Maya is the term used to describe the Caribbean Coast of Mexico where thousands of kilometers of white sandy beaches, clear blue waters and Maya Ruins line the one highway. The area runs south from Cancun to Tulum and continues to the Costa Maya, another location with more quiet and beautiful beaches.
Officially, the Rivieria Maya includes the small cities of Puerto Morelos, Playa Del Carmen, Xpu'Ha, Puerto Adventuras, Akumal, Chemuyil, Xcacel and Tulum. Combined, this area provides a wonderful treasure of vacation spots for occasional, repeat and long term visitors. Noone gets bored in this location and no one is itching for more to do! There is always something going on and always a new place to discover.
This Mexcian coastal region is primarily settled by the Mayans, an ancient tribe indigenous to Mexico, Guatemala, Belize and Honduras. The rich history, culture and ancient settlements have seperated this part of Mexico from other areas to the west and north. The colour of the ocean, the softness of the sand, the topography and geology is quite uinque and different to the mountianous areas of Puerto Vallarta, Cabo San Lucas and Mexico City. Surfers go west, divers and kiteboards have gone east. People hunting for Mayan history continue to learn and discover secrets of this society that built the Mayan Calendar, studied astronomy and constructed a very different understanding of the world as we know it.
This coast has always been a mystery and continues to surprise visitors and residents with the magic that lies in the area. Jungle co-exists with ocean, limestone paves the way and little jewels of history and archeology are uncovered all the time.
The Riviera Maya is a mystery, a history and an anomaly all in one place, making it attractive to the adventurer, the believer and the seeker of new and interesting things.
